Palouse Group

Who we are: Palouse

The Palouse Group, located in the Moscow area, is part of the Idaho Chapter of the Sierra Club, and is governed by a five-member Executive committee. We sponsor or co-sponsor 3-4 public meetings each year on various issues of concern to local members.  Recent meetings have included sponorship or co-sponsorship of a 'Fracking Forum", a showing of "Revenge of the Electric Car" and accompanying panel discussion, and a workshop on "Pollinators of the Palouse".  We also have a newly re-invigorated outings program. Recent outings include a visit to native Palouse Prairie on Paradise Ridge, and a hike up Fish Creek in the Lochsa corridor. Make sure not to miss our Huckleberry crepes at the annual Moscow Rennaissance Fair on the first weekend in May!

Palouse Group Conservation Issues

Conservation issues we are or have recently been involved in include:

- Clearwater National Forest issues including the Travel Plan and Forest Plan

  • Joined an appeal of the Travel Plan, and Forest Planning is ongoing

- The re-routing of Hwy 95 south of Moscow so that it does NOT go over Paradise Ridge:

  • Helped force the preparation of a DEIS to be issued soon

- Palouse Aquifer issues including participation in a lawsuit regarding water usage at the new WSU golf course.

  • WA State Court of Appeals hearing, October 25 in Spokane.

- Keeping Kearle tar sands-bound megaloads off the Wild and Scenic Lochsa corridor.

  • SUCCESS! TIME TO CELEBRATE! (but keep a lookout...)

- Encouraging local Palouse governments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and prepare for climate change.

- Working as part of the Palouse Environmental Sustainability Coalition, helping to educate the Palouse on climate change issues.
